The History.

The MainStay is located in a pair of historic buildings, Once home to The I.O.O.F and The Ayars Brothers Bankers, founded in 1901.

107 E Main St: the building was originally constructed as a Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal order of Odd Fellowship. The upstairs housed a lodge space for meetings, and events. The downstairs space was retail space.

Ayars Brothers Bank Building: Ralph and Martin S. Ayars worked in the Commercial Bank for many years and acquired financial interest in it. The Ayars Brothers dissolved their partnership in the Commercial Bank in 1901, and on March 20th of that year The Ayars Brothers Bankers firm opened at 115 East Main Street, just downstairs of where you’re staying! This space has been home to many businesses including the Claude Vollmer Garage.

In 1904 a check written on a piece of pine board was presented at the Ayars Brother’s Bank. Since it was properly written and signed by the drawer and properly endorsed on the back side, Martin S. Ayars, cashed it. The only problem presented was that it would not fit on the spindle with the other paper checks! Unfortunately, we do not accept pine-board checks at The MainStay!
